Chapter 1 introduces the concept of moving from being a "user" of an inherited system ("The Copy") to the "engineer" and "author" of a new system. The core exercise is to Identify the Inheritance, Cut and Replace the old pattern, and Set the Trigger for the new, self-authored behavior.
